Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lameness and weight loss

HS

Wise Old Thumper
Well, Squidgy again.
He developed a limp on his left front paw just over 10 days ago. He has been to the vet (twice!) who has given metacam and expected it to clear up within a week. She can't feel any swelling, or feel anything that may be problematic so suspects soft tissue damage at the moment.
He is doing everything normally, eating and moving about (although we've blocked off anything that he could jump on) - he even snuck past us and ran up the stairs the other day:roll: He's not drinking excessively either.
If it were just the limp, I wouldn't be too worried, as I would expect it to clear up soon. However, he is slowly losing weight as well. We are giving him extra food, some critical care and he eats lots of grass.
Could there be any link between the two?

Has the limp resolved ?

Any unexplained weightloss indicates a potential problem. Has he ever had a history of a Pasteurella infection ?

Hi Jane
no the limp is still there and he sits with his foot up.
He doesn't have a history of pasteurella. The only health problems he's had are malocclusion and ear mites.
The vet is thinking about underlying reasons for the weight loss, and she's tentatively mentionned a tumour, although she can't feel anything.

Just bumping this up in case anyone else has any ideas.
The limp has not got any better, and we're back at the vet on Saturday for a weigh-in.

This sounds awfully familiar to me - it turned out to be E cuniculi infection, it wouldn't do any harm to put him on Panacur just in case?
I really hope he's OK

Only just read your reply bugsyrabbit.

We went back to the vet this morning. Squidgy's put some weight on, and she's recommended a course of Lapizole (28 days) for him. Let's hope this sorts him out.
He's normal in himself, just has a waffy paw!
