  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

approx 5 year old bunny heavy breathing

Young Bun
hi,

my 5 year old ish female ally, has started to pant heavily. she is eating well, and drinking but she seems to get exhausted and pants quite easily. 2 weeks ago she was in the vets for an abcess in her ear, but this has pretty much cleared up according to the vet. She has just finished BAYTRIL tonight. any ideas as to what could be wrong?

i assume from my limited medical knowledge that she may have heart problems causing her to have to breathe harder

I would take Bun back to the Vet today
She may have a lower respiratory tract infection, despite the fact she has been on Baytril.
If she is not spayed then unfortunately adenocarcinoma is a real possibility. Uterine Cancer is very common in older Does and it usually metastasises to the lungs.

Heart problems are another possibility but she really must be examined by a Vet as all we can do is offer suggestions of what might be wrong.

Good luck and please keep us updated

I agree with Jane take her to see your vet ASAP.I would like to add please get your vet to take her temperature as she may have an infection due to the original ear problem. Please let us know how you get on.

thanks for your help guys, i took her to vets this morning and they said she did not have an infection. they said it appeared like she had cancer and advised us to put her to sleep.

i made the decision to let her go to sleep peacefully before it got worse.
i will miss her dearly.:(

Just because your vet tell you your bun has cancer, it doesn't mean your vet is right, nor does it mean your bun will die of cancer. You should try everything before you give up

I had 4 separate independent vet that told me I should put my bun to sleep due to the discovery of bone cancer. Guess what? I cure it after 11 mth. of treatment. Although she did pass away after the 12th mth., but that is due to post-op dental complication, and has nothing to do w/ cancer. Read the thread to cure bone cancer:

of course, there is no way of knowing the above treatment will work for your bun, but it's well worth a try
