  • Please Note - Medical Advice

    Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

    You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cut the quick

Hiya

We were cutting our bunnies nails today, and I don't like doing it becuase they are very squeamish and I don't want to cut the blood supply, but my mum was cutting his nails and he moved suddenly and she cut right into the quick. It bled a lot so we wiped the blood away but we still feel really bad because he seems to be very angry with everyone. He keeps tossing his food bowl around the hutch and hiding away. He keeps licking his nail and I don't want it to get infected.

Apparantly this is very common but I still feel bad because he can't tell me how he feels but I know that he's hurt. Do you think he'll be alright?

:cry::cry::cry:

I'm sure he will be just fine, I cut one of my rabbits quicks when I did their claws yesterday.

As long as it has clotted (stopped bleeding) then it chould be fine, they generally clean it themselves and the saliva is sterile. Alternatively you can get a medicated powder from most pet shops which you can dab onto the end to sterilise, it can also help it clot.

Thanks Sooz, I did think it'll be alright but I always make a moutain out of a molehill, and rush him to the vet whenever something like this happens, but he'll probably have forgotton about it by tomorrow anyway...

thanks again

i did it with frosty the other day shes all white with black claws, white claws are so much easier to the quick, but she was fine, was the sight of all the blood it does bleed a bit, but she was fine once i gave her lots of cuddles and treat for being so good
