  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please advise really worried now

Hi everyone this is a really strange question but i just wondered if rabbits can catch chickenpox? Reason i ask is because i have just developed them but was playing with shadow all afternoon and am now worried that i might make him ill :(

Dont panic! Shadow is absolutely fine, only humans can catch Chickenpox.

I've just copied and pasted this from iVillage...

Chicken pox has a fancier medical name called varicella zoster. It is a virus which infects the body causing the typical illness... Humans are the only animals that get chicken pox. Therefore, the only way to catch it is by being around a person who has it. The virus is spread through secretions and by tiny droplets, so sharing saliva (kissing, infant's toys, etc.), sneezing, and coughing are good ways to get the virus from one person to another.

Hope you feel better soon. I've never had Chickenpox, but all 3 of my children had it at the same time last year. :(

thanks lol feel better now. My 2 kids had it last year and i never got it and spent 6 years working in a nursery and never got it. Then totally out of the blue i get it!!!

Typical! I don't envy you, pox AND kids! I am fortunate enough to have a natural immunity to Chickenpox, German Measles and Mumps! :D

Hope there's someone to give you a hand till you feel a bit better. :bunny:
