  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

One of my buns seems to have taken a chuck of hair and skin off the back of another a few days ago. This left a wound of just under a cm square. I don't see any actual bite wound just a nasty red bit of skin.
A scab grew over it and it starting to heal but he seems to have scratched it off as this evening the scab was gone and there was a bigger raw patch. I'll take him to the vet of course but wondered if anyone has any experience of this. Seems to me he might just keep on wanting to scratch any scab off cause it is bound to be itchy as it heals.:?

Where about is the scab, has the buns had and injections or vaccinations recently? Sometime this can leave scabs.

If it is a bite wound it might be worth getting it checked out as the can sometimes form abscesses but if it is dry and not inflamed or weepy I wouldn't worry too much just keep an eye on it.

With bonding attempts we have had a few nasty bites like this. The vet has always given baytril and metacam, with some baytril to bring home and finish the course.

My buns have always healed up fine, with some tlc and cleaning the wound every day. :)

Thanks both of you. I was at the vet today - he also said there was nothing much to worry about. Put him on metacam and septrim just to be safe. They shaved him hair off around the wound so it does look pretty awful. Possibly it is one bite followed by another a few days later. Any more of this I'll have to seperate them so it becomes a bonding nightmare instead:roll: The buns are Spider who has been biten by Rapunzel (the orange cashmire doe) - there has been no hint of trouble between them before. I wonder if Rapunzel is finally getting less depressed and is just asserting herself unpleasantly. She is certainly a lot perkier. Or maybe the fireworks have put her on edge. Oh for a bunny mind reader...
