berties not well still..UPDATE....his bloods show anaemia:(

purplebumble

Warren Veteran
 hes no better at all...eatin g and drinking fine and passing faeces great nothing wrong he can go home without any tests...ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
if im ever unfortunate to see that stupid moo ever again ill kill her.or at least ill rip her to shreds verbally!:censored::censored::evil::evil::evil:

saw ellen today and shes an excellent bunvet tip top..
shes as worried as us and thought theyd taken bloods and iv fluids whilst he was there cos she saw him in there..he was in isolation!

his tummy is still empty..hes still on his baytril and metaclop and i have given him some metacam this afternoon as he had a rough old time. she put a gag in his mouth to check all inside his mouth and teeth in case there was something there. then she shaved his ear and took two vials of blood and then she rehydrated him with ringers lacate syringed under the skin in places so it would give him 24hrs worth of fluids anyway.
she said taking blood is only deifnate way to prove dehydration or rule it out in bunnies. also shes testing it for liver and kidney function.....and if that proves unfruitful then an xray might help show something up.
shes had cases of bunnies whove been ill but no obvious breathing probs and the xray showed up a mass in the lungs:shock:
she said if something does show up in the blood work then itll be the case of what can we do for him it maybe nothing can be done or soemthing that may only provide a bit more time and comfort but well cross that bridge.

she said in her last practice they were next door to a rabbit sabctuary so shed operate on at least 10 buns a week and treat them too..she said you soonlearn bunny medicine!
bertie still has an empty tum and after being home these past few days has only managed two tablespoons of poo maybe alittle less. eating fine my backside!!
i told ellen we had expected bertie to have iv fluids etc and how she said he didnt need them or blood tests but shes not allowed to comment.

she said sadly its fairly common to find these sorts of cases where nothing can be found wrong but something is wrong and all you can do is treat the symptoms until they fade away or get pts.

i can feel bones on bertie where i recall a lot of padding up until a fortnight ago:cry::cry:

hes nibbling hay..taking his meds with protest and chomping a treat after..a sugar free dried banana chip.

hes fading bless him..im sufering a breaking heart..poor ole bertie..my big dirty flirty bertie....:cry:

please please as much vibes for him as poss.

Loads and loads of vibes coming your way to Bertie and hugs to you too!, please try and stay strong for Bertie

thankyou..please keep the vibes coming..ive just heard from the vet with his blood results.
she says everythings a little askew but within normal parameters but usally like this as the journey and rpocedure casues such high stress levels.
shes concerned cos his test has proved positive for anameia:cry::cry:

she asked if hed been panacured and we said hes on it right now as parasite can cause it.
shes baffled as theres no signs of internal bleeding etc. she doesnt want to put him under for an xray andhas told me to seek the specialist at andover..well i have no way of getitng there...its a hell of a way from here and i dont drive..its a place i dont know either.
she has agred in that case to xray monday morning and if he survives to discuss the findings with the specilaist..hed probably want to xray him anyway.

if he goes under the ga as hes soooo weak and ill then its for the best but if i dont have it done he may go soon anyway.....i will bemaking an official complaint about this katy vet i can assure you.

poor bertie:cry::cry::cry:

He doesnt need a G.A For xrays both my rabbits that have been xrayed its been done concios
Hope hes ok

I've had bunnies who haven suffered with anaemia after long periods of not eating. It is usually caused by stomach ulcers as bunny stomachs are so acidic to digest fibre. Has he been having zantac while he wasn't eating? Sorry if i have missed this in a previous post.

can't use pills, get a bottle of liquid zantac from the vet, it's very cheap. It lines the stomach and will work almost instantly :D

:( couldnt get meds without 24hrs notice from our vets as theyre only a branch. im not going ot the ruddy hospital again and dragging bertie thru anymore...
i have to ring pharmacies to see if theyl let me buy some or ifitsscript only..if cant get nay il grind up the pills and make a solution like we had to once for metaclopramide when the vets suppliers couldnt supply....

ill ring up vets for dosgae advice..oh yeah no i wont...unless its not bloody katy the twit vet.

thanks for the info

Liquid zantac is prescription only, maybe you could ring the vets to discuss it without the need to take Bertie again. He needs it pretty quickly as if it is ulcers he will be bleeding in his stomach and in a lot of pain.

I have some here but can't really give it to you with out your vets permission plus you wouldn't get it till monday/tuesday and that is too long to wait

 if they had any i wouldnt get it till mon as i know they wont give it without a consult..but ill try anyway..ooh our branch is open 2moro..depends whos on if its that katy no way....ill ring anyway....and if they dont have any there which is usllay the case then if they can put osme up on sunday at hospital or later sat at hopsital then whpo cares....£40 taxi fare or dead/in painbertie....
ill post herein morming.

Good luck, I hope you can get some and it helps. I'm surprised the vet hadn't already given him any, our vet gives routinely with any bunny that has stopped eating as it also promotes gut motility :D

well its been a weird case and i have never ever been given it for any of our buns at nay of the vets ive had.!!

ive been looking online and gavilast infant is just a coating agent to soothe inflamamtion..its magnesium and sodium alginate(seaweed derivate) i might end up buying htat.im peed off as nurse has told me off for not feeding him via syringe:censored: wtf.....he was sent home cos THEY SAID HE WAS EATING AND DRINKING FINE grrrrrr
sorry just so worried im gonna lose him:(

Debbie im so sorry. Is there any one near you who has some spare Zantac.I have some but even if i send It to you The earliest you will get It is Monday. You have to give it twice daily and have the rite dose for Berties weight.

Zantac is ranitidine, as far as i'm aware it is the only way you can buy ranitidine. It inhibits the production of stomach acid which is what you need as if I'm right because he isn't eating and his stomach is empty the acid his stomach is producing is burning his stomach lining which is what is causing the stomach ulcers. As rabbit stomachs are highly acidic it doesn't take long for them to become so bad they start to bleed, which then causes the anemia. So you really need something to stop his stomach producing the acid.
I would be careful with buying any over the counter products as his stomach will be very sensitive at the moment and you could make the situation worse.

I have some too but fear it wont get there in time. It also really needs to be cleared by a vet before we offer prescription only drugs :?

Your are right Liz but I just get so cross with vets that dont give bunnies the treatment they need/deserve.Its heart breaking to watch Debbie banging her head against a brick wall and Bertie is no father forward than last week

I know what you mean, I feel the same. Especially as it is something so simple. Our vets have been giving it routinely for years, it astounds me how different vets are over even the basics
