Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Foster buns what would a rescue do? - Update

duracell

Alpha Buck
Hi one of my foster buns is clearly unwell. I got him out the hutch for his daily playtime and he has some swelling to his left jaw, he is usually a racy bun running round the kitchen seems much more subdued today. He is drinking a lot and I have seen him wee and produce a small slightly squishy poo but I have not seen him eat anything. I have no idea what's wrong but am thinking teeth poss abscess.

I have tried calling the rescue but I had to leave a message and am worried that this is urgent. Should I just get in contact with the vet direct or should I wait a little longer? To be fair I have only waited 20 mins

If it was one of my foster buns I'd definately want you to take him to the vet - if he is lethargic and not his normal self then you are in danger of his body shutting down and the earlier you get the situation dealt with the better his chances. Good Luck!

I agree, try again before you call the vet, but if there was a choice between being contacted and the rabbit sufferrng, I have to go with not being told before you go. I'm sure they'll understand. Do you not have a mobile contact number to get them?

take to a vet immediatly the rescue will put his helath first.. you culd book an appointment and keep trying the rescue until then. but i would say health comes first. xx

I foster for Chloaster & even if she hadn't put her tuppance in I'd book an appointment at the vet, although try to contact her in as many ways as possible at the same time. My theory is "would I take it to the vet if it was my own bunny?" if yes then I'd take him even if I couldn't get hold of the rescue.

Do you and the rescue not have any agreements drawn up? Any fosters i have I take to vet asap, but then I prIvate foster, but if I need fosterers then its agreed any vetinary care needed is given even if im not reachable and to pass my details on to the vet.

Im sure your rescue will be fine with you taking the bun to vets and they will sort it out next day or when they pick your message up. Sounds like a probable facial abscess maybe?

Good luck xx

Sorry for the delay in update but today has been a little mad. Ok He has been to the vet and they think it is not linked to the teeth. They have given baytril and metacam by injection as well as some anti inflammatory and we were given some Baytril to bring home. I just hope this is ok as I don't know this vet.
