Christmas Appeal

I need to get on and organise the rescue Christmas appeal. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts/suggestions for this year? What sort of appeal format do you like best to support and rescues - what do you prefer?

For those new to the idea, each year at Christmas we have a big appeal to organise a gift for lots of rescue. Sometimes we ask people to donate money to buy hundreds of small items (and companies to donate bits) then split them up into boxes to send out as big parcels for of goodies. Last year we raised funds to buy a 'big' gift for each rescue eg a set of weighing scales or rabbit run.

So any thoughts?

I favor rabbit medicine book(s).

We have done otoscope last year, and toys, and snugglesafe, and I don't think we have give out any good rabbit medicine book for a few years. A good book can save many rabbit's lives. So among whatever items to be given to rescue center, I favor this book:

The 5 minute veterinary Consult--Ferret & Rabbit by Barbara Oglesbee (2006 Edition), and as shown on the sample pages, it's very detailed and go straight to the cure, w/ great details on symptoms, and step by step what to do.

I have 4 books on rabbit medicine, including Dr. Hancourt-Brown's book, this 1 is by far the best.

I'm betting money that Amazon have great prices especially this Christmas on a lot of books. I got the above 4 books in very good Christmas pricing. This yr., due to the fear of recession, Amazon has downsize their profit forecast, so to gain as many sales as possible, just like Wal-mart, their price will be especially low.

FHB's Book is rather outdated now.........

How about contacting Intervet for a one off donation of some Myxo vacs. They'll need to go to the Vets each Rescue uses though :?

Steam Cleaners for cleaning hutches between each Rabbit intake (Steam cleaning will irradicate coccidia and is 'safe' compared to the alternatives such as Jeyes Fluid)

Non prescription things like probiotics can be costly so maybe a Bulk Order of Fibreplex/Bio Lapis/Avipro-C

Disposable gloves and Aprons. (For the two-foots not the Bunnies )

'A Christmas Promise'- We contact our local Rescue and offer some form of help (cleaning, socialising Rabbits,Vet runs etc) for an agreed amount of time in 2009. It'll cost us nothing but commitment to our promise :)

As we are all feeling the pinch re the Credit Crunch how about some of us making some Bunny Toys. Its amazing how much fun a Bun can have with a cardboard tube stuffed with hay !!

I'll try to think of a few more ideas

I think it's nice for people to be able to still donate small items if they want to rather than cash at a time we are all thinking about our money and saving it.

It is nice when people pick up a bunny bargain and buy an extra to give to rescues. We always appreciate toys and the extras really as all our fosterers get the basics on a monthly order.

id just like to say that we appreciate ANYTHING no matter how big or small. :)

Agreed:D
The things most rescues get through at the speed of light are the boring essentials such as bin liners, kitchen roll and exam gloves..spray disinfectants are always useful for everyday cleaning along with the little scouring pads
..
..and willow toys like the bundles of sticks.. which are a favourite with the buns here..
all these things are relatively inexpensive but needed:D

I'm sure we all have bigger things we would like but it is a year where everyone is watching the pennies so perhaps the parcels of bits and pieces would be best.:D

We could all give the name and details of a vet we use then if anyone did want to make a cash donation, either because they are feeling flush!!...or they can't send bits for a parcel..they could pay into the vet account:?

I know we're always grateful for anything. Donations to our vets especially, all the things that Jill mentioned and even daft things like coming along to help out at a fundraising event or shaking a tin with us if you're local (you might be asked to dress up as a carrot though!)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw what a lovely idea. I'm obviously new and haven't come across this before, and I do think it's a truly lovely idea :) I can't wait to see what the outcome is and what we decide to do.

Ditto (minus the carrot bit )

Totally agree. I thing most rescues are pleased with whatever we get as it all helps:D. I go through rabbit toys like anything.
Steamers are a good idea as I have been looking at buying one ofthese myself

I like to point out the toy idea doesn't work for all buns. I chat w/ Tam last Christmas, and she mentioned those re-home buns like toys. So I figure that my ones should like them too.

I bought 2 of those sea weed balls, and a sea weed ring for my 3 buns. In the end, not much. The ring was finally "done" with the other day.

The 2 balls, 1 was worked on by the 2 buns, the other 1, they didn't really do much until I "induce" them to play w/ the ball. I even have to put hays thru the balls to induce them to chew on.

Most rescues have lots of bunnies to switch toys between so can give them to bunnies that like to chew etc. match the toys to the bunny :D

I think if I can get some volunteers to help we could go for the hitting companies (er asking really nicely ) for donations of lots of little useful things like bin bags. Then putting together boxes.

We could also put together a list of suggestions for people that wanted to make up their own boxes.

Jason - I really like the idea of information too, I don't see why we couldn't try some book shops to see if they'd donate books :D

I was really impressed with last years organising :D If your up for it then it would be great if it could be expanded and promoted on the main site too so more people could get involved?

definatly, it was only a little thing originally but everyone loved it! plus i liked the fact it was anononmous, and u cud have one or four secret santas it was up to you!

(i also liked the fact it was from the bunnies )

ill write up a bulletin type thing for the fundraising section asap, to get the ball rolling :D

also maybe put recomendations? like people can get what they want, its up to them, but we could have a list of suggestions too

Here's my 2 cents worth: since there are 6000+ members, we could tell them that we'll put a rectangular ad. of their co. on this web site for the pre-christmas--chirstmas--new year time frame in exchange for any useful free donation.

So you don't think I'm goofy?

sorry if this is silly but what about those in N.I if i want to make a donation to a rescue centre either with cash or toys should i donate it to my local rescue centre (which i've never been to as it's 50miles away from me)? (my local rabbit rescue centre is Assisi) what way do you's work the donation is it split between rescues or the donatees choice? sorry if this is silly
