  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mucoid Enteritis, Coccidia or ?

I chose a bunny girl for my boy bunny, the day he was supposed to meet her she became ill, passing jelly & not eating. She was admitted to the vets & passed away 2 days later, at 6am she was eating, 7am gone (13th Oct) :( At the time it was thought to be a complication of her spay, she had weaned 2 babies who were both with her at the time of my visit (5th Oct) but these had been removed from her later that week as her son was getting a little fruity.

On 18th Oct i took my boy to the shelter to be bonded with another girl, all was well until Weds (22nd) she too was now passing jelly but still eating and fine in herself. She was admitted to the vets where she didn't pass poops for 2 days but she did get better & was discharged yesterday on meds.
Because her symptoms were the same as the other bun the shelter were advised to quarantine her, hours later she too had passed away. :(

The fecal sample results will be back Friday & the shelter were asking for a PM to be done to try to determine what it is/was.

At the moment my boy & the other bunnies are fine, including 4 young buns, all my findings say both of these diseases affect young bunnies but these 2 were aged approx 11 months & 2 years.
Could it be a tragic coincidence?
Has anyone any experience of similar?
I can't bring my boy home until they know what it is as i have other buns & other animals here & i'm so worried :(

How sad

It sounds very much like Coccidiosis to me. Mucoid Enteritis is not really an actual disease but rather a description of a collection of symptoms. Mucoid enteritis usually has a primary cause such as Coccidia or antibiotic use (to treat another illness)

It sounds as though the Shelter are being responsible and taking appropriate action during the disease outbreak. Please let us know what the Laboratory findings are.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of the Bunnies
