  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Letting an abscess heal

Well, the pus is lessening by the day.. I am still putting manuka honey on and there was only a tiny bit of pus tonight. Will it ever get to a point where there is not a drop of pus? And how do I let it heal? Will it heal ok with the manuka on or do I need to remove that and just let it heal over or will that let bacteria in again and start the process all over again?

The abcess should gradually heal from underneath, you must keep the surface open so the pus can be flushed out. Sometimes the honey will make the surface skin sore. If it does I find that soothe gel from gorgeous guineas helps take the red out.

I have treated abcesses that have taken months to heal, but they do go eventually. Patience and perseverance is vital.

Ahh... so I keep up with the cleaning until it reaches the opening. Thinking about it it is coming from less far away now so that makes sense! Thanks! :D

The wound is doing really well actually at the moment. Not red at all. I must admit I feel a lot better knowing that there is some sort of barrier between the wound and all that travels in the air/ world!

Still no idea what the actual lump was! :? Ah well... maybe it's just something he'll have to live with.
