  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny claws...?

When my bunnies go out in their runs, I keep them always on the grass. So their claws often need trimming, as they're not being worn down on concrete (and any digging they do tends to get me glared at, but they still occasionally try and dig their own warren  ). Apart from one very stubborn boy bunny, who dislikes his back feeties being touches AT ALL, and will tuck them under himself with a strength I swear he should not have, they're all fine with clipping.

I've noticed, with one of my bunnies, that the claw that is situated at the back of her forelegs, the one that - for lack of knowing the proper name of it - is sort of on the inside of their 'wrist' - it grows at more of a curve. Dunno why, but with her, I really think if I did not keep an eye on this, it would potentially grow into her leg. Obviously it never will, but I've not noticed this with the other rabbits, and was wondering if it is something that occurs only in certain bunnies?

That's a dewclaw and every bunny has one on each front paw, although somebuns seem to grow them straight as opposed to curved, but even the ones where they grow seemingly straight still curve a little.

These are the ones that need the most watching because they can grow round and into the paw if not clipped enough. These ones don't wear down at all so need more attention than all the other nails where they do wear down, even if just to a minimal extent.
