  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Anaesthetic

Hi my rabbits has spurs on his back teeth and he is having to go under general anaesthetic every 3 weeks to have them ground down as they are growing back so quickly. Wiill GA this often eventually harm the rabbit.

A GA every 3 weeks will eventually cause problems. There are some Vets who are willing to do some molar work without GA, although this can never be as thorough as a Dental under GA. But maybe your Bun could have a full Dental under GA every few months with just superficial work done without GA as and when necessary.

Is your Vet experienced in Rabbit Dentistry? Sometimes if the molar burring is not done correctly more problems can be created than were there in the first place.

If you can give your approximate geographical location maybe we can help you find a Vet who will do some superficial dental work without GA.

What is your Rabbit's diet like and have any Xray's been done to assess his/her tooth roots?

Hi I live in Shrewsbury. Not sure if x ray has been done i know its the 2nd to back on the left that is the problem. he has a diet of hay, grass, kale, dandelion leaves and a small amout of rabbit pellets. he gets the odd bit of carrot, broccoli stork, basil and is generally a very happy lively bunny.
