  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wobbly rabbit
i have a 3yr old neutered female dwarf rabbit. i have been 2 the vets with her as she is wobbling when she walks and is also off her food and water. blood tests were done at my request and came back as there being an infection somewhere and raised glucose levels. shes on antibiotics and bio lappis. diabities is a possibility but the vet said he doesnt know whats wrong with her. this was 3 days ago. she is eating a small amount of carrot daily but nothing else. i was going to try her on babyfood but im worried that if it is diabeties her sugar levels will go nuts. what am i supposed to do? the vet told me to take her back in 5 days if theres no improvement but has made it clear that he doesnt know whats wrong. i thought maybe it was an ear infection, but im not a vet.

Can you try finding another vet near you? Rabbits need a rabbit savvy vet, and it sounds like yours is not. Can you tell me your nearest town? I'll see what I can find for you.

This does not sound good, and it sounds like your bunny is struggling a great deal. Can you maybe soak some pellets in water and syringe feed your bun? Another option is critical care (which you can buy from a vets).

I agree with Sky-O.You definitely need to see a rabbit savy vet ASAP.Do you know If your vet has sent your bunnies blood Off to have It cultured to see which bacteria you are dealing with and did he look in her ears?Where do you live?

I am sorry your Rabbit is poorly
If the 'wobbliness' is neurological in origin then EC is a possibility

http://www.rabbitwelfarefund.co.uk/resources/content/info-sheets/ecuniculi.htm

Your Rabbit would need treatment with Fenbendazole (Panacur/Lapizole) and anti-inflammatories (eg Metacam) if EC is suspected.

Your Bun may not be eating because she is in pain. You dont mention that the Vet gave any pain relief?
If she is not pooing much now then that means her GI tract is slowing down and she is at risk of developing GI stasis.

So I would strongly advise you to contact the Vet again today and not wait 'for 5 days'.

If your Vet is not experienced in Rabbit Illnesses I would advise seeking a second opinion.

Diabetes in Rabbits is very rare and the symptoms you describe dont fit with a Diagnosis of Diabetes. Stress alone can cause a Rabbits blood glucose level to rocket, just having the blood taken will cause anyBun stress.

If you let us know your approximate geographical location maybe we can recommend a Bunny Savvy Vet local to you.

i took her back and he did xrays to see if theres a blockage to explain the not eatin. there wasnt but her food isnt moving through, he has changed all her medications. she has what i think are antibiotics 3 times a day, this sticky white stuff which smells sweet twice a day and is on liquid feed.
he cant see her wobbling but i can and so can everyone where i work. she leans over onto her left side and even fell over onto her back this mornin. i live in flint and i found a rabbit specialist in liverpool but when i phoned to see if she had any advice she said she wont talk to me while my rabbit is recieving treatment from another vet

the ileus has cleared up now and she is beeing treated for E.C. we think that she might be blind in one eye tho now.. thank you all for your help x
