Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Esme.. U/D... has now been spayed by FHB

Bunny Buddy

Wise Old Thumper
A couple of months ago Esme was booked in for a spay but unfortunately had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic. My local vets were absolutely brilliant and did everything properly and lucky I got Esme back safely. They however do not have the expertise to want to risk trying again so I'm taking her to see Frances Harcourt-Brown (only about 40 minutes away) to see what she advises.

I really would like to get little Esme spayed as I think she will be much happier as well as getting rid of the awful risk of cancer .... then hopefully she can be happily bonded with Artie too!

The appointment is next Tuesday. I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome. Sonya (Bunny Camp) thought there would be a good chance she could be spayed, I really do hope so.

Lucky you Francis Is one of the top bunny vets in England.Im sure she will get Esme sorted out.Good luck

Hope all goes well :)
Your Vets sound great in that they are willing to admit there are some things that are outside their expertise. I wish more Vets would seek expert advice when out of their depth.

Thanks Maizey and Billysmom.

It's taken me a couple of months to build up the courage ... nothing but the best for a funny little cross-bred from an unwanted litter

Edit to add: Thanks Jane as well !!

yes its good when vets wil laccept that they cant do something i wonder why bun had a bad reaction? it might be she needs a diff type of anestetic or maybe just would be ok the second time.. fhb is a brill vet and i know jason(our brill vet has spoken to her before when wanting addditional advice!) hope it all goes well xx

It sounds like Esme couldn't be in safer hands - I can completely understand why it would take you a while to get the courage to even try again and it's good that your vets are honest about their expertise too, rather than just willing to take a risk. Hope the appt goes well. xx

Update

Well Esme was examined this morning and FHB thinks she's a good candidate for a GA and doesn't see her history as stacking the odds any higher against her than if she didn't have the history of stopping breathing.

She has two favoured choices for the anaesthetic, the one Esme has already had and the other (embarassingly I forget the name) but it is one type of anaesthetic (morphine-based) followed by isuflorane. She will have the latter to be on the safe side. The morphine one may mean she is dozy for longer and she will be having an overnight stay as the car joruney is a bit long and she needs another painkiller and anti-inflammatory the following morning.

She's booked for next Wednesday, 22 October. I'm pleased also to announce that the fee for a basic (uncomplicated) spay is £75, I was prepared to pay more for a specialist but this price news is fantastic.

*happy dance and panic all rolled into one*

Awww, that's great news. :D:D I hope it all goes really well next Wednesday and, by the sound of it, there's no reason why it shouldn't. ;)

The price is excellent - our vet charges £65 for a spay and, for that price, they'll even let a locum who knows nothing much about bunnies perform it. :?

Thanks all for the good wishes, the news is just sinking in that it can be done. Whoo hoo.

so pleased for you. I wish i could see FHB!! you bun is in the best hands and I hope she makes a speedy recovery!

Thank you! I felt very nervous at meeting a 'legend' She was lovely, talked for ages, no rushing, plenty of explaining and reassuring. Esme didn't struggle once, it was fascinating to watch her handle Esme, I've never seen a bunny being so totally calm when being examined.

Found her............:D

HArrogate - far too far for me and my lovely boys Eric and Ernie :cry::cry:

Good Luck anyway for next week - Esme wll be in very good hands!!

Quick Update

She was spayed yesterday and back home, starting to eat again, settling slowly but at the expected rate.

The anaesthetic went smoothly, no problems reported at all.

I'm so glad I decided to pursue it... not only for what it means for her life but for me not having to stress about her getting cancer through not being able to have a GA.
