Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying/Microchipping

I had my bun spayed a few weeks ago, reallly glad I did because she's alot calmer. :) I also got her microchipped at the same time, about a week after I noticed a big scab on her back which was making her fur lie funny. I then found a smalller pea sized one a bit furthur down on her back.
I paniced so I took her to the vets. The vet told me what has probably happened is the chip has irritated her and she's been scratching alot which has caused the scabs.
Has anyone else experienced this? The big scab has only just come off and I can see a little cut. Will it be down to the chipping or could it be something else. I was told to leave it alone and it'll heal itself but I dont want to leave it if it's something other than the chipping? :? Any advice would be great.

A microchip at the end of the day is a foreign body and can cause a small minority of animals to have a reaction and the body to try to expel it, especially a small one where the chip is obviously relatively big in comparison to the size of an animal. Once the body has encapsulated it with scar material, it should settle down.

As long as it's healing now I wouldn't worry, though get the vet to run the scanner over it next time you visit to check it's there, just in case.
