  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I got my bunny a new cage and she hasn't been pooping ever since. She sleeps all the time and she growls at me.

What's wrong!?

a cage can't alter a bun's diet. So it must be a coincidence. A bunny not pooping is a very serious matter. She can die in less than 24 hr.

Best guess is bloat. i.e., feel her stomach, is it hard?

What you should do is to get to a vet as urgently as possible. The vet has to be a rabbit specialist. An ordinary vet does not know anything about rabbits, i.e., an ordinary vet is not an exotic pet specialist. You have to call around for rabbit specialist before you drive her to the place.

At night time, the duty vet at hospital is most likely not an exotic pet specialist as night time vet are always junior vets.

do you mean she is not pooping at all or pooping outside the cage? if not at all then need to get her to a vet asap. if not in cage she just eneds re litter training if she isnt already speying may help this x

Vets have special medicines that can help a bunny who has a problem with their digestive system, so a trip to the vet is probably best.

The stress of a change in environment can trigger ileus - where the intestines slow down, appetite is poor and poos don't pass through. This is an emergency in rabbits and needs rapid treatment from a vet to get everything going again and make sure that there isn't another health problem that could also have triggered the ileus. The sleeping is another sign of being unwell, she is lacking energy. The growling may be due to the pain, as stasis is a very painful condition and rabbits in pain can become very defensive.
I would contact your local vet, see if they routinely deal with rabbits and get her seen.

It could also have been cuased by a behavioural problems if she uses a particular place and that place is not there now (I had a bun that did that and I had to guide him quickly out of stasis).

Whatever the cause though, she does need the vets.

How is she now?

If i was you i would put something in there which she knows is hers like an old toy of hers or some bedding from her old cage.
