  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

No weight gain

Young Bun
We got our baby Ike when he was six weeks old from a local pet shop.
Since then, (he is 3 months now) he hasn't really gained any weight, you can feel all his bones, and he pee's and drinks a lot.

We put vitamins in his food every morning and we give him loads of hay and recently have started giving him food to fatten him up.

He doesn't look poorly but our other baby, Kesia, who is 10 months old, has always been fatter than him, even though they're fed the same...

Any advice??

Have you had him checked out by a vet? There might be kidney problems if he is drinking a lot and not putting on weight.

You can try adding oats to his pellet food. Regular rolled oats, not flavoured, and just add a tiny amount to start with, and then increase the amount he has. That can help them put some weight on and is easy on the tummy.

thanks
no not taken him to a vet yet, we have an appointment for his inoculations due this month (Oct)...
I'l get him some oats tomorrow...

He probably should be seen by a vet soon. If he truly has not put on any weight then he will either be emaciated, or he is not growing. Did you actually weigh him when he arrived and now? How much does he weigh?

We've been feeding him milk and he's putting on some weight. I'm comparing him to our older bunny Kesia, and she's always been bigger, we were told she was a dwarf but I dont think she is.

We bought Kesia from Pets at Home, and although I'm not happy about where the baby originated from, I do not believe we are encouraging animal farms, instead I believe we gave him a good home and he is loved by us.

Insinuating that we did was mean, and not necessary...
