What my vet said about myxi

flowergirls

Warren Scout
Took Rose for her VHD yestserday- it's a tiny little practice, and the vet said he had seen 15 rabbits with myxi in the last 2 weeks- only 1 was vaccinated, and that was the only one that had milder symptoms and survived.
We are not traditionally a bad area for myxi around here, and the recommendation is still every 12 months, not 6- all of mine are within the 6 month time frame at the moment anyway.
Just wanted to pass this on to anyone wondering whether or not to vaccinate- I know most on here do anyway.
We live in Cumbria.

That's really sad, isn't it:(

I think it's generally good practice to have them done every 6 months. We live out in the countryside, so it's an absolute must. It also means they get a good check up every 6 months.

How sad - doubly sad when the vaccination is less than £20. My vet told a similar tale, but it was 3 that week and they all died. I think the general attitude is still "It's only a rabbit" and I hate to think of the numbers of people who's rabbits get sick with it and are just left to die in their hutch as it's only a rabbit and they won't spend the money on a vet trip for it.

Myxi has been at high risk where i live for at least the past 2-3 years there used to be loads of wild rabbits near by unfortunatley as soon as Myxi got here they all died pretty quick and there has been any since :( i have mine done every 6 months September and March it works out. and i will continue to do so even if it went to low risk.

Some people were shocked when i said i had spent £97 on having my 5 vac'd, i thinkn they all just think Rabbits are meant to stay in hutches and die within 3 years :( without being shown love and affection

I've come across this attitude a lot, especially about how long they live for - when you tell someone your bun in 3 years old, they go "ooo might not last much longer then" I feel like shouting from the rooftops - that's not even middle aged!!!

I only pay £10.50 per jab, which makes just over £100 per year for mine. It may seem a lot I suppose, but it's my choice to have that number of bunnies, and I'd hate to see any of them suffer through my negligence.

I have an indoor bunny. Does anybody know if myxi is around the middlesbrough area? I know there aren't many wild rabbits around where i live but i take him out on the harness just to have a munch on the grass. It's only a daft piece of green in the middle of a load of houses so i figured he'd be ok. He's only 9 weeks and he hasn't had his jabs yet.

Should i not take him out until he has his jabs? It only going to cost £12.50 for the myxi jab and £10.00 for the VHD jab :)

There's a danger of myxi in every area, obviously some areas greater than others but it is a possibiliy wherever you live.

I would be getting the vaccination done just as soon as you can, I think six weeks is the youngest they can have the myxi jab, maybe eight weeks but he's definitely old enough. It's always good to have a vet look them over in any case.

My boy is a house rabbit, and never goes outside, apart from the vets!
He has been vaccinated every 6 months.
I would get it done whether the Rabbit is in the house.

Every evening Im seen running around with fly swats trying to kill mosquitos that have come into my house when I have opened the door. I would always vaccinate house bunnies every 6 months.

every time my vet does the myxi jab he says ill see you in a year.... i just agree and book em in 6 months latas anyhows :lol::lol:

i think last year there was no cases at our branch of the vets but the main branch in halesowen saw a few... its evil :cry::cry:

Eeek! Whereabouts in Cumbria? My two had their myxi in July and I was going to leave their next one until April/May, but might get it done as soon as the 6 months are up. Vets seem to be really "whatever the opposite of clued up is" about how often Myxi jabs need to be done. My vet told me that it only needed to be 6 monthly if your rabbits have contact with wild rabbits. Apparently quite a few people round here have their bunnies free ranging in gardens where they've seen wild rabbits  and told me that as mine are in a run they don't need it every six months. Do we need to start an educate vets as well as owners campaign?

full-blown myxomatosis is contracted by biting insects biting the rabbit then spread by rabbit to rabbit contact
while nodular myxomatosis is contracted by biting insects biting the rabbit only and thus not spread from rabbit to rabbit. If a vaccinated rabbit is bitten it will normally have Nodular myxomatosis - a form with better prognosis (though sometimes almost as unpleasant for the rabbit).

I have only EVER heard of 2 unvaccinated rabbits that survived full-blown myxomatosis, whereas many vaccinated rabbits will survive.( ...unless anyone on here has a unvaccinated bun that survived full-blown myxi?)

If one is 100% sure they will never will have any biting insects(midges/mosquitoes etc fly in through the windows or doors then don't vaccinate the indoor bun. The risk is LESS for indoor buns than outdoor buns but there IS still some risk. One might of course wish to consider the risks involved in giving a bun the myxi vaccine as all vaccines carry some element of risk. ....Its a question of weighing up the risk to their particular bun.

The 12 month vaccination is usually enough in an area of normal risk. The 6month vaccine is recommended for areas of high risk.

However- an area can change from low/normal risk to high risk quite quickly.
I got caught out like that-fortunately my (outdoor)bun(9yrs at the time) did survive nodular myxi tho it has left her with ongoing eye probs)as she was still at the end of the first 6months of vaccine when the immunity is stronger. We had warm weather with flooding -ideal for the biting insects to multiply-and of course the more of them there, are the more chance a myxi carrying one will bite your rabbit. (I had been debating whether or not to give a booster but she caught it before it was due).

Do not underestimate the distress a bun goes through with nodular myxi-never mind what you go through in cost of meds and worrying bout your bun! Last year it cost me £150-I've had her booster done this year-£17.

Yes some vets do need educating-make sure you have a rabbit savvy vet who knows how to do the myxi vaccine-part goes into the skin and par underneath-(anyone explain this in more technical details please?)-Sue:wave:

i think you are referring to the 10% which must be given under the skin intradermasly this can be done either in ear as there is only skin to put the injection into or into scruff by either pulling out to skin at end or putting into skin first then going in deeper with rest of vaccine.

you should their faces when i say i have 2 five year olds  ''oooohh sounds like an oldie bet they move slow'' nope inn fact faster than an 8 week old sometimes

A a baby group i go to a couple of poeple have said their bunnies died by the age of 2  i am shocked as they say its because they are just no good at 'keeping' them

He will be vaccinated next time i get paid :D

I wasn't sure when he would be able to have them but i'm glad he's old enough. I do worry about him lol.

I know i'm going to sound stupid.. but whats a rabbit savvy vet? A vet who knows about rabbits? Specialises in rabbits? or just is good with rabbits?

Roslyn's Vets, near me, is a small animal vets so are they rabbit savvy?

In Carlisle- in an urban area too- it's a city practice. The vet said every 12 months was still ok, mine were all vaccinated since June anyway so I feel ok .
about it at the moment.
Whereabouts are you?
