  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

last night i read that rabbits like apple tree branches and we have a great big tree in our garden. So i sent hubby out to get a few twigs (he comes back with branches  ) and both our rabbits seemed to love them. But i am kicking myself...i am so used to living where we live i forgot. We live beside a distillery, so all the trees in our area are black! It comes from the distillery and is harmless to people but i have no idea for rabbits. I am not even sure what turns the bark black in the first place. They both seem fine this morning but i feel very nervous and am kicking myself for not realising.

Well just see how the buns go but I wouldn't risk giving it to them in the future.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Sending them good vibes.

its been 24 hours now and they have been absolutely fine, no change at all but i will certainly be more careful in the future, i am blaming it on pregnancy brain!

Just see how they are - if it's been 24 hours I would think that they will be ok. If you are concerned why not phone the vet, just to put your mind at ease.

It is a type of black mould that grows on the trees. Mould can sometimes produce mycotoxins but they only tend to cause problems if the rabbits have been ingesting them over a period of time and the toxins build up. If it was just a one off then I'm sure they will be fine :)
