  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore ears

One of my rabbits, Pumpkin, has lost fur on her ears and they're all dry and flaky. The insides are clean and look fine. Any ideas what this could be? My other two are unaffected.

Is it just the ears or is it around neck area? Does it look dandruffy? Normally loss of fur on ears is due to scratching them and then makes dry skin. Doe the ears smell at all? You say no mites what about fleas?(fleas tend to go to head area as its warm and cant be nibbles up their)

One of my buns has a little bare spot on her ears (about 3mm diameter) and she is going straight to the vet's when hubby comes home tonight (he has the car and the money!). I don't want to take any chances and feel bad about not having noticed it sooner, although I did take her to the vet in August when I noticed some dandruff but they said it was nothing to worry about. Take the bun to the vet and it will be sorted quick as a flash. 'better safe than sorry' I always reckon - but I am a hypochondriac

It doesn't seem to be bothering her too much (haven't noticed any scratching) and is only on her ears. I'm going to book them all in for their boosters next week so will have the vet look at it then.
