Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

I have a problem with my rabbit after the surgery

v.valy

Young Bun
A month ago i spayed my female rabbit. For 5 days we gave her antibiotics and after 10 days from surgery we pulled out her stitches. After a day we saw that a little hole was made. The vet that made the surgery told us to put Baneocin powder(I hope you have it in your country). The hole was covered with a crust, but after a couple a days it fell and under it was full of purulence. We took her to another vet and she gave us a cream that scar(i don't know how to say it) to put on her for a week. The cream include: marigold, camomile, rattle and comfrey. Is it good for something or not? In our country there aren't many vet that know about rabbits and in my city is only one... the one that made her like this.
Please if someone knows something tell me about it.

i dont know about the cream but i hope she is ok soon.

When you say you pulled out the stitches, do you mean you or the vet? Was it too soon for the stitches to come out? Does the hole look infected?

Hi, this is my opinion as a vet STUDENT: Baneocin is an antibiotic cream or powder commonly used to treat wounds and skin infections. the other cream is a natural remedy that may aid wound healing by "boosting" the immune system. If you have any baneocin left i would use that over the cream and if possible get it in a cream form rather than a powder. if the wound still contains pus then it should stay OPEN i.e. remove any crust or scabs with warm water and cotton wool, perhaps with hibiscrub or another suitable antiseptic in the water, to allow the pus to drain out. keep the bun off wood shavings or anything else that might stick to or enter the wound. how long has it been since she saw the second vet? if its not improving within 3-5 days of the last visit i would take her back again. there are not enough vets anywhere that know about rabbits but you may be able to get some advice over the phone if you can find an expert at a vet school or specialist vet clinic. hope that helps!

VikkiVet thanks for your answer. She doesn't have any pus right now.

We went to the vet for all the things. The vet that made de surgery told us that after 12-14 days to pull out her stitches, bun another vet told us to come after 10 days to see how is it healing. After the 10 days we went and she pulled her stitches because se said that it was healed and in a place it started to make some pus. The scar did look healed, but the second day the hole apeared.
That cream she told us she said that it makes tissue grow. To tell you the truth the scar looks a lot better right now(just now i put some cream on her). It isn't swollen anymore, it's dry but i hope that the hole will close. It almost looks like it is normal to be.

Actually the marigold cream helps the skin - not the immune system.
marigold - Calendula in suspension or in tincture is used topically to reduce inflammation, controlling bleeding and soothing irritated tissue.
camomile - It has acaricidal (Miticides or acaricides are pesticides that kill mites.) properties against certain mites, such as Psoroptes cuniculi.
comfrey - The herb contains allantoin, a cell proliferant that speeds up the natural replacement of body cells.

i think we are both right -
...reduce inflammation, controlling bleeding and soothing irritated tissue..cell proliferant that speeds up the natural replacement of body cells

thats the immune system! but the miticidal effect i agree is not. either way, if there is still infection i.e. pus that needs to be treated first before you promote wound healing otherwise you end up with an abscess

but if you say the wound is dry and clean then i would simply keep it clean and let it heal slowly. ATB

Thanks again for your answers. Today when i put cream an her i saw that the scar looks verry good. It isn't swollen anymore, it's dry and has no pus. I noticed that the cream is absorbed verry well. Every time i put cream on her i see that it isn't trace of cream left from before.
I forgote to tell you that she stay on towels from the day she had surgery. The towels are changed every day.
Here is my girl Puchi:

Good news. The little hole it's closed. It looks very good. Monday we're going again to the vet. Hope she'll say that she's fine.

post spay stitch should never been pulled. Sometimes they can take 3 weeks to 4 weeks before it is totally healed. There is no logic to pull it so soon. Your vet shouldn't have advice that.

AFter the 3 to 4 week time frame, they have fancy scissor to cut the stitches off.

We made how the vets told us. If we knew we would had been waited another week. They said that the stitches are absorbable and it would take 6 months to be absorbed and it's better to be pulled after 12-14 days after surgery because can make a reaction to it. The vet cut the stitches with a normal little scissor and they almost could not be seen.

I went today with her to the vet. She said that the scar is looking very well, it's healing and that we should keep puting cream on her.

Can I also add my stiches from the inside and they use a glue on the outside to obviously stop pullin of stiches. However, when giving myxi and vhd jab the lot goes into the scruff of neck!! Yet that is a bad thing?

I came back to ask for your help again because other problems appeared.
The scar from the surgery is healed but on the inside she has made a hard lump. The vet said that is normal, it's a reaction from the empty space that was between her skin and the muscle but she doesn't know what to give her. She said that to dogs and cats she gives iodine tincture but she doesn't recomand it to rabbits. Do you know something else that i coud give her?

I have another problem with her that i realy hope that you could help me. From the day i bought her (when she was two weeks), her poop was a little soft a couple of times per week. After some time she started to poop every day mostly in the mornings. We asked the vet and she told us to take some normal and soft poop to test them to see if there are any kind of vermin(pests, i don't know the exact word). The tests came out and they said that there aren't any vermin and her poops are normal. They gave us to give her some medicine named here "Finidiar" (1/2 tablet a day for 10 days). One tablet contain: Bismuth subnitrate 300 mg, Kaolin and natural extracts 250 mg. In the past two weeks her poop started to be softer then it used to be and her bottom is dirty and full of poop (this happens only in the morning, after this her poops are normal). Today is the 7th day with "Finidiar" and nothing changed.
If someone can help us we'll be very grateful.

Ps: I don't think that is from her food because we change it many times(we thought too that the food could be the problem but it wasn't) and she is eating a lot of hay.

Perhaps it's just scar tissue that's formed inside? There's nothing much that can be done for it, and it wont harm her

Sounds like the medicine's making her worse, not better. I'd stop giving her the tablets and put her on a hay-only diet for a few days to see if she improves; then when/if she does slowly re-introduce other foods - ensuring they're not causing her any problems.

Thank you for your reply.
I don't think that the medicine is the problem because she started to be this worse before i started to give it to her. Just that the medicine is not good, doesn't do anything.
I will start to give her only hay and see what will happen.
