Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

tiny red mites

Hi back on again with another problem!!! after my rabbit finished her 5 day course of antibiotics for her bacterial infection i noticed some dry skin on the back of her neck after a few days of close inspection today i noticed that she has tiny red mites in her fur.. She is booked into the vets tomorrow for me to get some shampoo (another traumantic experience for my 10 week old rabbit which iv only has two weeks). i have been told that they get the mites from the hay?? is this correct?

Plus sorry to ramble on my rabbit never stops eating hay i can put loads in to fill out her bedroom area for a bit of warmth and the next morining its all been scoffed can she be over feeding? or is it healthy for her to eat so much hay?

Sounds like harvest mites(Trombicula autumnalis). My dogs and cats get them sometimes and they are a pain to get rid of. They are sort of a deep orange colour, commonly found aound the feet, but one of my Staffords recently had a bunch next to his eye. I tend to use tweezers to remove them.

Theres no such thing as too much hay :)

ivermectin is very effective for getting rid of them in rabbits.

stronghold or frontline work really quickly on dogs.

my dogs always pick up harvest mites this time of year but as soon as frontline or stronghold is applied they're dead within thirty minutes

Thanks for your advise just got back from the vets he applied some solution to the back of her neck and lilly has got to go back in two weeks for a check up so fingers crossed. :p
