  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sick bunny - fever, lethargy, not eating but a lot of drinking

Poor Toby is not feeling very well at all. Since yesterday he's had a fever - the vet took it and it's 40-41C - he's not eating much and he's all hunched in the corner of his cage. He was drinking a lot yesterday which is unusual as I've seen him drink only once in the four years I've had him. I took him to the vet today and all the tests came back normal except for his temp and his red blood cell count was at the low side of normal (which may or may not indicate anything). The vet thinks she may feel a small mass in his abdomen(tumour? abcess?) so wanted to do some x-rays. It was tender to the touch. We are seeing how things go though and he has ben sent home with special powdered food so I can hand feed him and antiboitics incase of infection.

Any ideas what it could be?:(

How old is the little guy?

Is your vet an exotic pet specialist that specialize in rabbit?

If only seen your bun drink once in the past 4 yr., then there is no way to determine if the water that he drinks is a lot, for all you know, that's the way he drinks in the past 4 yr.

Has the poor Bun had any pain relief ?

An abdominal Ultra-sound Scan would be useful but it does sound as though Bun is very poorly

If the Red Blood Cell count is low then there are numerous reasons that could be the cause and the Vet would need to establish if it regenerative anaemia or non-regenerative.

I hope your Bun can be helped.
