Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lump under my rabbits chin =(

JLeaf311

New Kit
Hi, I'm new to this forum- I found it while I was looking up what could possibly be wrong with my baby.
He has a hard, marble sized lump under his chin. He's always had this little bag of skin under his scent gland, but I noticed last night that it is full on one side. I'm pretty sure, from my research, that it's an abscess. The problem is is that I do not trust any vets in my area. I've called around, and either they don't have any experience with rabbits or very little. What would happen if I were to just let it be? Could it sometimes just be a little infection and then go away? Of course I'm watching him like a hawk and he is licking his lips and his scent gland more frequently. Otherwise he's his same, happy self. I'm so scared.. lol, sorry. Any opinions would be very helpful! Thank you

aw nooo an abscess will nOT go away by itself...hell need baytril probably and to have it drianed if poss....

why dont oyu print off the info on here somehwere hteres loads of cases on abscesses...or info off the net..then take it to your local or most possible ok vet and tell them you want it treated as per net details.;)

bertie my big white frenchie boy had one on his chin..it was orrible! the pus isnt loose or runny.its kinda like cream cheese or toothpaste:shock: and i had to keep bathing it putting thiss tuf on it and givng him baytril. it wasnt pleasant for him at all but we caught it in the nick if itme before it had time to go deeper or spread..the vet was amazed at how well it healed and cleared up. but saldy they can then reoccur. if you odnt get this treated asap it wont be good:(

is your bun a lone bun as its usually another bunny bite that causes it. but trauma say from a sharp twig or a splinter etc can start one..its caused by many sources of bacteria including pasturella and staph infections..the infections from the pus can spread from the area to surrounding healthy tissue..so you must get it treated.

have you tried asking the houserabbit folks for a list of vets in your area in your state?
i know its hard over here but we always think you guys have it easier cos pet buns esp house buns are so popular over there and have beben way before any housebuns etc beacem widespread over here..i guess it doesnt mean vets get any better sadly:(

have you tried searching for a vet here....

good luck..keep us posted:wave:

The closest "recommended" rabbit vet is 6 hours away from where I live. Rabbits aren't popular at all in the state I reside. I will probably call around some more and see who I feel is the best for the job. I really really REALLY hope it's nothing too serious because I don't have the money to get him looked at right away. I WANT to, but I can't.
He is a lone bun. The only friends he has is me and my fiance (which he is very happy with :D). I'm betting it's probably this new food we got for him. It is pellets with these little pieces of red food in 'x's and 'o's, and the red ones are kind of hard. He LOVES them, no doubt; I'm thinking that he probably cracked one of his teeth, and that's how it started. It's at the bottom of the little bag under his chin though. Not attached to his jaw or anything. I swear I've seen that swell up before, then go back down... if that's true, then what? Bah! I just wish I knew a lot more about rabbit health.
Thank you for your advice though =) It is VERY much appreciated.

My Bobby has a jaw abcess. It was a tooth root that caused his.
He has had his abcessed drained at the vet. They literally made a hole in his chin and squeezed all of the goo out, washed it out with hibiscrub and gave me some baytril (antibiotic) to give him.
This has been done about 5 times now. It has not had to be done in the last 3 months, as the abcess has not refilled with pus.
Bobby's abcess is in the bone, and I can feel is misshapen jaw. However, to look at him and his behaviour, you'd never know there was anything wrong. I did notice he got a little skinny, but I divide the feed up into smaller and more regular ones (he lives with a partner and she was getting greedy!)
Good luck with finding a vet.

Take a photo and show us.

Is the lump moving?

Are you referring to the dewlap on a female rabbit?

Also, some vet accepts monthly payment if you ask them ahead of time, or you can do monthly payment on your credit card. But I agree w/ you, if your vet is not an "exotic pet specialist" who specialize in rabbit, you are totally wasting money on vet bill.

I have seen those non-rabbit savvy vet, they are a total waste of time.
