  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Normal Poops and Diarrhoea

My bunnie, Buttercup, is having a small bit of diarrhoea. She has normal poops most of the time, but the odd one (three yesterday and one last night) are very runny. She is eating normally and looks well in herself. I am changing her food over at the moment (mixed in with the old food) - could this be the problem. Should I take her to the vets? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

I would give her just hay and water for a few days. What food are you changing her from/to? You could also give her some probiotic to help the good bugs in her stomach. Fibreplex or biolapis are both good, think you would get it from the vet.

Are you sure its diarrhoea and not excess cecals? If trampled in they can look like diarrhoea (sorry if that's a stupid question).

It sounds like the cecals are loose rather than the normal poos.

If this is the case, should I still stick to just giving her hay. How do you tell the difference between diarrhoea and loose cecals? I have just been out to the run and there is another loose (poop / cecal) - its dark brown and quite smelly . . .

Has she had anything unusual in the past 24 hours? Anything sugary? More pellets than normal?

Make sure you clear them up because they can attract flies and other nasties.

I'm not hot on what to do (because I'm not sure what illnesses could cause that. I know mine get it sometimes and they are not ill, but the fact it is smelly might imply other problems), but I would say push the hay. I find that giving little and often works best for mine (as opposed to a handful all in one go) because it smells fresh and they are more inclined to eat it. And hopefully someone more useful will be along shortly.
