Flossy - EC - A big dilemma

Hi everyone,

I don't really post much anymore but I really need some help.

18 months ago Flossy was diagnosed with suspected EC, presenting itself as a bloodshot and discoloured eye, going on to make her blind. Flossy had a looong course of Panacur (6-8 weeks I think) and has had courses every 3 months ever since.

Her eye sometimes weeps and consantly is changing (more cloudy) but with a constant white patch with bloodshot areas. It has been managed with Maxitrol drops.

Today upon inspecting her eye the white patch is significantly bulging  Its very prominent. It looks like it *could* burst - is that possible?!

Last time I spoke with my vet he said that if it got much worse (which obviously it now has) the only option would be to remove the eye. My vet is a mobile vet and does not have a surgery. I do not have a good rabbit savvy vet near me as far as I know.

What would you do? Flossy is a 2 year old, unspayed (due to her health), single french lop doe.

I understand it is very expensive and often unsuccessful and where the hell would I get I done?! I just wnt to do the best for her, any ideas or further treatment suggestions please

I know nothing at all but one of Liz's ( Hugo's there) buns has just recently been seen by the vet, I think the bun is blind and does have funny looking eyes, but anyway vet said there was probably tumours behind the eyes. Could this maybe be the case with Flossy?
Maybe give Liz a pm and ask her more detail about it? Good luck Flossy x

One of our buns has just had his eye removed, Paula did a fantastic job and he has made a brilliant recovery

I replied to your pm before I saw this thread.

Lottie has bad cataracts in both eyes but the whole eyes are bulging from her head rather than just the white area which is why my vet thinks she has tumours behind them.

Flossy's problems sound different as it is just the white area that is bulging if I have read it correctly.

If she does have a tumour behind her eye, eye removal would not be effective but I'm sure your vet would easily be able to pick up on the possibility of a tumour.

I hope my pm is of some help, and offers you another possibility that you can explore before resorting to eye removal:D

But you are miles away! Will Paula travel?!

I know I am miles away, but we could bring Flossy up here and she could stay with me whilst she has her op and I can nurse her afterwards and then she can come home to you when she is better

awww thats a lovely gesture Snowy, hope Flossy gets on ok at vets tommorow.:D

Oh Lucy I really hope Flossy can be treated successfully and won't need her eye removed. Although I don't have any personal experience of a bun who's needed it done, I do have one who has cataracts and she manages surprisingly well.

Really hope you can get some good news for her.

I have spoken to my vet and he is coming to see her Monday. I read him your PM Liz and he said that could make sense so is bringing some abx with him in case.

Out of interest roughly how much do your vets charge Liz and Theo to remove an eye?

My vet is also going to speak to an eye specialist who is not too fr away but he thinks her prices are extautionate (sp?)

Many thanks guys!

I really hope it is something that can be sorted without resorting to removing the eye :D

I have spoken to my vet just in case and it is £106

my rabbit mowgli is currently on lapizole for EC and has got cateracts in his eyes to he is now completely blind in one eye, the other eye he still has site in

Yes, Flossy has had numerous courses of Panacur/Lapizole. I tried the Lapizole for one course in case she was 'spitting out' the nasty Panacur! Still no difference though.
