  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vaccines in the US

So, I have phoned two vets in my are who see rabbits (one only does spay and neuters) and both say there are no vaccines to give a rabbit, so are these vaccines i keep hearing about only in the UK?

I'm another US member, so I think I can answer this one :D.

There aren't any vaccines in the US for rabbits. The vaccines in the UK that members are talking about are for myxi and VHD. And, fortunately, both diseases are not prevalent in the United States (myxi outbreaks have been reported on the west coast -- Oregon, California, and the like, but this is not common and there have been no wide-spread epidemics). In the US, the main preventative care for rabbits will be in spay/neuter programs, flea and tick care, and diet/nutrition.

If you are uncomfortable posting this to the forum, but would like to e-mail or PM me your location (state is fine), I may be able to help you find rabbit savvy veterinarians in your area. Even a phone consultation could help you feel more comfortable with rabbit care as a whole and preventative medicine. You can e-mail me through this site if interested or send me a private message. I am also more than happy to help you with quality feeds and hays (suppliers and products) so please feel free to contact me.

I'm not sure if you are a new rabbit owner or not, but it sounds like you are trying to learn all there is out there so that you can be the best bunny "parent" that you can be. And I just want to commend you on that -- it's wonderful to see and hear.
