Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Unexpected Litter

Hello all this is my first post so forgive me if it's not in the right place. About a month ago i got our first rabbit and i was told that is was a male. Low and behold it has turned out to be a female. I went out to clean the hutch this afternoon and I saw a ball of fur and wondererd what was going on until I saw something wiggle amounst the fur. So i went to get a pair of disposable latex glove and Ivestigated and counted 6 kits. The hay was a little damp and had some poop in it so i changed it keeping the fur and some of the old hay. Since i done this the rabbit has not returned to the nest. I went to the pet shop and I realise now i should not of done anything. What do I do now I want the babies to live or is it too late.

First, I would advise you to change the heading to ask for help for unexpected litter, the people who can help are more likely to notice the thread and be able to offer advice.

I'm not an expert but the mother doesn't spend a lot of time with the kits so as not to draw attention to them so try not to worry too much at this stage, she is more likely to visit them at dusk.

Hopefully somebody with more detailed advice will be along soon.

Rabbits only feed their young once a day so ignoring the nest is normal. I would leave well alone now and the mum will probably feed them late tonight.
