  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Sterilization

I'd ask your vet a few questsion....

Should I starve my bun before the op (the answer to that should be no)
Do you use glue or stiches? Hopefully they glue the wound as bunnys tend to pull stiches.
When you go to the vet take plenty of hay and pack a lunch box of his/her favourite treats.
When you bring him/her home they may be feeling a bit glum for a few days. Use a soft paper based litter to stop it irritating the wound and try and tempt them to eat.....vegetables are usually more sucessful than pellets. make sure that they are eating, drinking and pooping properly....you may have to put the food and water right under their nose to get them to eat/drink. If they don't start to eat/drink within say 6 hours of bringing them back from the vet you'll need to take them back to the vet who may give you a syringe and some liquid food.

agree with all the above but i would temp with parsely and corriander and warm mashed pellets and dandilion leaves to get the bunny re eating again..
would say keep them warmer than normal if its a bonded pair dont split(unless obv reason ie m/f nether neutered) if the bun is to be bonded in future give 4 weeks for hormones to settle and if meeting an unspeyed female beware they can be fertile(males) for up to 8 weeks.
also first 24 hours is cruicial keep warm and indoors check temperature by their ears(ie touch ears) if they get cold warm your bun. for bedding shredded paper is nice or blankets..fleece ...(non flufffy) vet bed or sft towels xx
