Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Whats on my rabbits back?

Today when i was grooming my rabbit i found scab like things on his back. There are only a few where his new fur is coming through so he is malting alot and i groom him alot there. Any idea what these things may be? Thanks
:D

Hi Rebecca, does he live with another rabbit or on his own?

He lives by himself he runs around freely in the garden during the day but although we back onto a field i think it would be very unlikley that another animal could get too close to him

Hi Rebecca, it could be Cheyletiella parasitivorax, i.e a small fur mite (very rare in domestic rabbits), does he have dandruff and small bare patches as well as the scabs? It could also be mange (treated with malathion), fungus or the beginning of fly strike.
You really need to get him to a vet asap and get it checked out.

Well im pretty sure his npot fly strike as rabbits usually die after about 24 hours (correct me if im wrong) he has no bald patches or dandruff everywhere else is clean and normal...

correct me if im wrong but i think they mainly get flystrike on a dirty bottom, i would get him to vets hun to put your mind at rest as to what it is :)

Flystrike is usually on the back end but it can occur anywhere on the body I think.

Have you actually seen the scabs or does it just feel like that through the fur? Only asking because Alfie is moulting too and I thought I felt a scab on his head and when I managed to part the fur I realised it was just some new hair growing through that was quite short and stubbly.
