Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

myxi vaccination in ear

I took my buns to the vet tonight for their second ever myxi jab. I was very nervous about it as the first time Leon ended up falling/jumping off the table to escape. I think it was the jab in the ear he didnt like but the vet just put the needle straight into his neck this time.
Is it only their first myxi jab that gets partly done in the ear or does it just depend on the vet?

All mine have been done in the neck, but I dont know how their first ones were done. I know that they're supposed to have part of it in the skin and part under it (something like that!), so maybe some vets do it in the ear??

Yes part of it is supposed to be delivered into the skin. Some vets chose to do this into the ear but some chose to do it into the skin where they give the rest of the jab.

Some vets don't bother doing any of it into the skin, but don't worry they will still be protected. The part into the skin just makes the vaccine a bit more effective.

yeah exactely the same happended with me...i saw 2 different vets. the first did liquorice's jab in the back of the neck, but the next vet did JP's in the neck and base of his ear.....which resulting in him getting a nasty weeping lump appear on his ear, that eventually went down after a couple of weeks. so from experience i think it is just vet dependent.

the reason part is done in the ear is to ensure 10% of vaccine geos beneath the skin(intradermusly i think sp?)
the rest is fine as normal. some vets do this by doing part in the scruff tehn pulling out then doing the last bit in the skin of the scruff therefore the rabbit only has 1 needle *****. i personally prefer it all done in scruff provided its a veet i can trust as i think it going in the ears probly hurts more. however i have also heard its better adn more effective if done in ear so i guess its the vets choice.
