  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pardon me for being a bit thick but...

If a doe has been spayed then the dewlap will disappear? Is that correct. My Penny has been spayed but since then she has been observed making a nest (just the once) and also it looks like she has a little dewlap. Sally her sister hasn't got one at all.

I know when I posted on here that she was making a nest some said that perhaps all the uterine tissue hadn't been taken away so it is a possibility that this is the case. Anyway I'm rambling - does the dewlap disappear?

AFAIK spaying does not make the dewlap shrink or disappear; but if a doe is spayed early enough then her dewlap wont develop, or get any bigger if it has developed already.

My 2 (only one left now) were spayed at the age of 18 months/2 years ish, and both had dewlaps. After being spayed, Dusty's dewlap gradually disappeared, whereas Clover's just reduced a bit (her one was bigger in the first place). It does take a long time for the hormones to go down though.

It *can* make it shrink - my rabbit Poppy had a huge dewlap which all but disappeared after her spay - however my other bun Sorrel still has a big dewlap several years after spaying. So in my experience, it depends on the bun.

Spaying can make a dewlap disappear over time but thats not always the case. i think it depends on how big the dewlap was when the spay took place.

Lucky was spayed earlier this year & her dewlap has practically disappeared :D
