The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Advice on keeping EC at bay...

Rabbers

Mama Doe
Last year we battled for ages with one of my rabbits, Rolo with incontinence and then finally paralysed back legs.
That's when we realised it was EC and treated both rabbits with Panacur for at least 6 weeks. Rolo pretty much stopped the incontinence, her coat looked better (CONSTANT moulting), put on a little weight (good as her partner is greedy!!) and her legs loosened up.

In the last few weeks there have been a few wet patches on the hutch floor (even tho they have litter trays) and her coat is looking awful again and she seems to be a bit stiff in her left back leg. Do you think this is the EC coming back again?
I'm going to treat them with Panacur again and see if that helps.

What are your tips for keeping EC away after it has infected your animals and also how long have you managed to keep this up? I'm worried for Rolo - she's now 6 and looks stiff and scruffy. All advice and experiences very much appreciated!
thanks xx

In my experience, yes it can keep coming back. :( I've currently got Dusty on yet another 6 week course. The other things I do are using a bleach 10% solution every week for half an hour on the litter trays etc.

right I'll get bleaching then too. I've got the Panacur going again so that should help.
I think these are the symptoms again tho I'm not sure if she's just stiff with the damp weather etc, btu it can't hurt to treat her again... I'm not waiting for the full blown symptoms like last time.
Thanks!

it will always come back.....unless you treat your bun every day there will always be one little sucker somewhere that makes it through. Therefore, the best thing you can do is:

Treat every three months with a nine day course & maybe a 28 day one once a year.
Bleach everything like a manic to prevent re-infection during the course
Keep an eye out & if you see the symptoms crack out that panacur.

You can get panacur in a liquid form from wormers.co.uk (say you have a dog though as it is not licenced for bunnys) which works out much cheaper.

Great thanks. Do they take the panacur liquid as easily as the paste - mine love licking the paste!

I find the paste easier, it's a stronger concentration so you have to give less.

The paste is 18.75% and the liquid is 10% so it is true that it is less concentrated, however if you are going to be worming your rabbit often the liquid is far more economical (if slighly less easy to give). You options are either to syring it, add it to something tasty (mine goes in bananna) or pop it on to some bread. If they like the taste they may lap it off a spoon.
