  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

It's urgent please help

I have had advice before for my yr old rabbit who has had frequent bouts of snuffles which have been treated with Baytril. He responds very quickly to antib's therefore vet keen to keep using Baytril......Yesterday he stopped eating, drinking and pooing. I took him straight to vet who said he is in stasis. He was given metochlopramide s/c and I was given a further 3 doses to give him (2 day course). He also was to have fibreplex (pro & prebiotic) which he was to have for 2 days. I have done most of this, he has only 1 dose of either drug left and I don't see a great improvement. He is hardly pooing but is keen to nibble on grass, however not nearly as much as usual. He has had 5 days of Baytril which was completed last night. I'm gutted & don't know what else to do with my boy. the vet said yesterday he may not respond to treatment. what else can I do??????

aw poor baby, as long as he's eating something this will keep his gut going. it's maybe stressing him running to the vets too, hopefully this last course you've to give him might do the trick, are you keeping my inside or is he outside. make sure you keep him warm with a hot water bottle. sorry don't have any more advice than that. try giving him different herbs too out in the wild they'd go searching for herbs that will help him heal. i've heard there's homepathy rabbit specialists about you could try that if the vets can't do anymore. hope he gets better.

dont know etochloropramide so forgive me if it is same thing but has he had any probiotics? to counteract the baytril? maybe some biolapis? this would help i think? to get to eat/drink more then i think you should try herbs such as corriander parsley(fresh) or mint.... picked dandilions are also oftren something a porly bun will eat. you can try mashing his dried food in warm water this seems to do the trick if you get desperate with him not eating try vegatablle/fruit baby food licked out of a saucer or aoff a spoon(can be syringe fed if ness) to get him drinking then i would add atiny bit of apple juice or pinapple juice to his water and warm it up a bit they seem to go for this also put water int a bowl sometimes when they feel ill this is easier. give him tummy rubs..has he ahd a pain killer yet? i would give him metacam? and if vet wont prescribe i know people have used infacol on here but idont know the dosages..jacks jane would tho om her? i think massaging his tummy gently might help if there is a build up of gasses? i hope he gets better soon vibes your way xx

Did he get any pain relief? A bunny in pain goes into stasis easily. You don't mention whether he had any Metacam or similar?

Metoclopramide is a gut stimulant. Infacol is good in cases of gassy tummies, but doesn't work on all (never helped any of mine).

Something else that is good for hurting tummies is peppermint tea (obviously cooled). Syringing plenty of cooled boiled water will also help stimulate the gut.

Sorry forgot to mention he has had metacam yesterday avo. He is kind of going in and out the house, out during the day as its warmer but inside at night to keep him cosy. He is a pretty stressed boy at the best of times as lived for 1st 7 months of his life in a tiny cage in a pet shop. It has taken a long time to gain his trust. Thanks for the herb advice I'll get some this avo. I feel useless & feel I should be doing more

Have you noticed the Metacam working at all? I mean, did you notice an improvement a couple of hours after having it? I find that Metacam seems to work best with a half dose every 12 hours, and doesn't seem to last the 24 hours that it is claimed to.

Just re-read your first post. Although he's had Fibreplex, it's probably worth dosing some probiotic too. Baytril is very tough on the stomach. I've never given it to bunnies, but I've known a piggy get severe diarrhoea from it that probiotic sorted out. You can get probiotic from the vets, or Pets at Home.

I did notice improvement with metacam. Fibreplex is pro & prebiotic so I thought that would be enough. I'll telephone vet again to see if more is required. I'm off to get herbs. If you have any other ideas please feel free to let me know. thank you so much

Sorry for not letting you all know sooner but bun is fighting fit again :D:D. He's back to normal & eating me out of house & home. Thanks for support & great advice. x
