  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

URGENT (I think) advice needed please - teeth chattering

Gregory is sitting with his teeth chattering - different to the grinding he does when I am rubbing his nose. I can see his chin vibrating - it looks and sounds like when a person't teeth chatter when they are cold. He has been doing it on and off for about an hour. He has eaten some dried grass, drinking and weeing as normal (or normal for him, which is lots at the mo - waiting to hear back from vet from blood results looking into that.)

Any ideas? I'm a bit worried as I am going away earlyish tomorrow for a wedding and not back til later on Sunday - my Dad will be poipping in to check on bunster!

Bump. :) Sorry, I have no helpful advice. I've read that teeth grinding can be a sign of pain but not sure about chattering. Hopefully somebody else will be along soon. Does he seem ok in himself apart from this? Or is he hunched up/quiet?

Thanks for bumping! :D

Well, he's a bit quiet generally at the moment anyway - I've been putting it down to whatever is causing his excessive drinking. He is hunched but he often sits like that. He's gone to sleep now (I think! Well he's hunched in the middle of the living room floor with his eyes half shut and his nose still!).

I've opened a window as it was getting pretty warm in here and he went and sat by that for a bit so maybe he was too hot? I think I'm just being paranoid cos I've had such a worrying couple of week swith him. I'll have to leave him til morning now and see how he is then.

Hiya,

teeth grinding can mean they are in pain but its usually accompanied by hunching I beleive. Sorry I can't be much more help.

Parsley does teeth chattering. Unfortunately there are two types of chattering and they are very very similar!
The first is a sort of elaboration of the 'purr', so when he is very happy. This only very very rarely happens without strokes or holding.
the other is when he is afraid - he does it on car journeys, in the vets waiting room etc. he chattered when he broke his leg 2 weeks ago.
he is a very vocal rabbit (he 'noms', hums, grunts, chitters, purrs, and also does these two types of chatter.

I suspect unless your bun s feeling deleriously happy for no reason they might be unhappy? (sorry - thats not a very helpful comment!.)

Ha ha - no I don't think so, although he does sometimes jump about as if he's having a dream. I've left him to it now and hoping that it was just that he was too warm. We're back at the vets later in the week fo rmyxi jab anyway - she may know what he's doing.

He's thumping away now cos I've left him on his own!

How is he today? Is he eating and drinking normally. It could be that he is in pain or has something wrong with his teeth. You will need to emphasize to your father that a bunny can go downhill very fast and if he isn't eating and pooing, he does need to see a vet immediately. If you have time, I would get the vet to check him before you go.
