  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Parsley ate his staples - will he be ok????

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
Just took Parsley to the vet to have his staples out along his broken leg (plates and pins inside are obviously being left in, this is just the external stapling of the skin).

Anyway - we have been checking his leg daily but what with Teasal now having an appaling time with his bladder at present we have not been watching Parsley every minute of the day.

Anyway - got to vets and looked at leg and he has obviously pulled out at least 2 of the tiny staples in the last day. She said that he may have eaten them!!!!
I have searched everywhere and cannot find them in his bedding back here (though we did clean out his cage this morning and he has been on a small 'run' on lawn).

Vet seemed to think that if he had eaten them they would pass through him ok and there was no need for an x-ray - but when she took the others out of his leg they looked horrid and pointy and sharp and large and just the sort of thing to puncture a rabbits intestine!!!!

Has anyone had this happen to them??? PLEASE reassure me that he will be ok. The broken leg and surgery was bad enough - but now staples!

we once had a female bun who unpicked her spay stitches ...she had to be stapled back together ...she ate the staples ... never found them in hutch or poo ... but she was ok ...:?

I would hope that they have just gotten lost amongst his bedding.
Try not to worry, how stupid is that comment..........
