  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hi im new t o the group so any help will be nice. in the last wk ive lost 2 baby rabbits which had bad runs can anybody help:cry:

baby rabbits are very prone to tummy problems, usually caused if weaned to early, large dietary changes, excessive sugary foods like carrots are given or poor hygene. They can pick up bacteria like e-coli from us & also may fall prone to Coccidiosis http://www.galensgarden.co.uk/herbivores/health/coccidiosis.php

This is a nasty parasite and if it takes hold can decimate a group of rabbits. Only the strictest hygiene and mass disinfecting with something like jays fluid of all hutches & runs plus urgent vet treatment can stop the rabbits reinfecting themselves or others.

I suspect it is not coccidiosis as it would go through your rabbits like wildfire & is more likely e-coli or mucoid entiritis http://www.cottontails-rescue.org.uk/gutstasis.asp caused by some other bacteria. In all cases loose stools in babies should be checked out by the vet ASAP. I would take any other babies showing these symptoms to the vet urgently.

Are they babies you bred or babies you brought? How old were they and how long had they been away from mum? What diet were they on?

Babies are very sensitive. They shouldn't leave mum until 8 weeks old minimum. They should be fed on exactly the same diet as they had growing up and any new foods introduced very gradually.
