Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Very sick bunny

I have a 3 month old netherland rabbit and it recently (yesterday night) started having diarrhea. I tried keeping it hydrated by giving it a lot of water. It wasn't feeling well at all, it has a lot of diarrhea, it's extremly weak and it is in pain. This morning I brought my bunny to see a vet and they told me the heartbeat is slow, the temperature is low as well and they are going to keep my rabbit at the vet until tomorrow to do treatments. I'm so scared for my bunny, is there any advice on what I should give it when he's back home?

Thanks :(

Sending loads of vibes to your bunny. Bun is in the right place ast the vets :) Im sure your vet will tell you all you need to do when bunny is better and ready to be collected :)

In a young rabbit with acute onset diarrhoea and weakness coccidiosis needs to be checked for asap- this can be done quite easily with a poo sample.

The vet called and said I can actually come get my bunny because it's feeling a lot better already and that I will have to give him medecines for 5 days.
I am so happy it's fine, I didn't sleep last night I thought it was going to die
thankss for the replies :)

Gad to hear bunny's on the mend.
Did the vet give any indication as to what the problem was?

yes it's back home, soo glad!! :)
they told me it is probably the food that changed too much
they gave me Trimetoprim-sulta, 0.1ml 2 times per day for 10 days

Glad the bunny has improved. When I first got bunnies, one of mine developed severe diarrhoea and was hospitalised. In my case, I had given him too much veg. Thankfully it wasn't coccidiosis

Glad to hear bun is on the mend :D
If ever you need advice re feeding or anything bun related, ask on here. Theres always someone else who has had the same question/problem & therefore able to give you some advice. Its a great site :)
