Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Panacur and water drinking

We have started a 9-day panacur course for two of our buns. It's the first time we have done this so naturally we're a bit neurotic about any changes in their behaviour/poos etc. The only thing of note is that the went through almost a whole bowl of water last night. Usually they would drink only a little. Is this typical?

no a typical effect although the presence of medication in their blood stream might be making their kidneys work to flush it out....which would increase water consumption. Some bunnys drop their caecotrophs when on panacur...Water drinking can be quite variable & depends a lot on how much hay they are eating and the water content of any veg.

As long as you are following the correct dosage (1 grad per 2.5kg of bunny weight) you should be fine.

Both of my rabbits have recently finished a 28 day course of Panacur as one tested positive for EC. I didn't notice either of them drinking any more than normal all the while they were taking it.
