Insurance

Young Bun
Is it worth getting pet insurance for Rabbit? Have you found it worth having or an unnescessary expense?

Many thanks, Anna

if you only have one or two buns i think its well worth it.

my insurance paid out £345 when alvin had stasis and had to be admitted to the emergancy vets

I didn't have insurance first time round for my 3 buns and thankfully all the treatments they needed in their lifetime never came to more than the annual premium. All the treatments were straight forward and we never had to face the decision: expensive treatment vs pts.

On the other hand we had to live with the uncertainty and worry that we may have to face a massive and unexpected bill.

Now I've definitely got the one insured, the other is over the age limit and I need to ring up and see if they'll cover him. I think it comes down to peace of mind.

If you look at my most recent threads you will see I have just paid £4,000 (four thousand) pounds for a complex fracture repair that had to be a referred to a specialist centre.

I havn't any insurance - but wish I had!!! Previously my largest bills have been £400 or so and it had been worth the 'risk' as I have 12 rabbits and the monthly insurance premium was so high that it would soon mount to £400. But I sure wish I had insured after all!!!.

As long as your bunnies are fit and healthy it is definately worth it. If they have pre-existing conditions then they will be excluded from the policy and it is likely that most new illnesses will be linked to the old one and so not covered.

I'm with petplan, haven't had to claim yet and hopefully never will :)

I agree it's worth it, I currently have my 2 insured, one of them had a cyst which needed surgical removal (approx £300).
Jeremy who passed away earlier this year had almost £600 of treatment after being referred to a specialist for treatment... theres no way I'd have been able to afford it myself!
If pet insurance didn't exist, I don't think i'd have my 2 bunnies, 8 cats and 2 dogs!!

Thanks everyone, I'll get the insurance in place over the weekend. We do have insurance with petplan for the dog who would have to live to 28 before the premiums cost more than what I've claimed on it! I just wans't sure about Rabbit but you are all right, it's worth it for peace of mind as I'd hate the thought of having to make a medical decision based on what we can afford at the time.
