UPDATE Parsley's Long Op. (sorry don't know how to update earlier threads)

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
Parsley made it through his 3 hour operation of his broken leg. Its seems a miracle given his irregular heart, and also the bad state of the fracture. I was allowed to see him at 4pm and he was already eating although the op only finished at 1pm (thats my Parsley!!!!).
He was still a bit cold round the ears so the nurse took him back to the (warm) wards and we will see him again tomorrow.
Of course silly me I am still worried - as now I worry that he will stop eating or get cold overnight!!! and I wish I had asked if they have given him a heat pad. They have 24 hour nursing and vets though so he should get looked after and I have taken lots and lots of food from the allotment in for him (all his favourite weeds and freshly dug carrots). It was a 1.5 hour drive each way - but worth it just to see him nibble a pear slice.

I can hardly believe how much has happened in the last 48 hours - from finding him with the twisted leg all horrid and upside down and sticking out backwards, then the drive to the emergency vet, then our vet and the awful x-rays, then the specialist referral, then the op and the drive there, and now being able to visit him.

It is a miracle and I feel so privileged (wrong word but I am still all odd and shaken up).

Now all we have to do is try and find a way to pay the bill. We are not insured as we decided it cost so much every month to insure all 12 buns - but his bill will apparently be about £4,000 - £5,000 (and no I have not accidentally added extra noughts!!). 3 hours of intensive aneasthesia team and specialist small animal fracture surgeon and all the preparation and intensive care before and after - and of course the specialist metal pins and plates etc etc..

But all that matters is he is over the worst . . . though those cold ears do worry me!! . . goes away and worries to self and wonders about ringing ward nurse for fourth time this afternoon and asking about heat pad . . . .

I'm so glad it went well, sounds like a really excellent place and that he is getting the best possible care :)

I'm sure if he needs a heat pad they will provide him with one, but thats the sort of thing I would worry needlessly about too

:shock::shock::shock: at cost

im so glad hes got thro the op ok hun xxxxxx

btw even if he was insured they only cover upto £2000 i think

you is the best bunny mummy :love::love::love::love:

So glad the op went well, I have been wondering about Parsely all day. i'm sure they will look after him well.

I'm so glad Parsley's op went well. Sounds like he is in very good hands there. Sending vibes for his continued recovery x x x

:shock::shock::shock:

I paid £300 to have Scouts leg fixed and pinned. I am so pleased Parsley is OK though :)

I'm so glad Parsley has come through his op OK.fingers crossed its successful.I paid over £3000 for Barlies treatment and she ended up having her leg amputated at the end of it.By the way she didnt have a broken leg

I am so pleased that Parsley pulled through have been thinking about the operation all day.

Parsley is a very very lucky bunny to have an owner like you :D

What a worry for you, i hope he will have a good recovery.

:shock: at the bill!! maybe you and all your family and friends can start doing car boot sales to raise some cash :)

Get well soon Parsley :love:

Thanks for the good wishes everyone - we are picking Parsley up later today as they feel he will recover better here (as buns do).

The only slight hitch (apart from the bill and the pieces of bone that need to re-grow!!) is that he has bitten his tongue whilst coming round and so has a swollen tongue which hurts when he eats. We are hoping the swelling will go down soon.

Can't wait to have him home again!!

I think the reason for the huge bill is that it is a referral place - I know that my own vets charged about £400 for Willows intestinal surgery, and the same for Sage's anal reconstruction, but in this case my vets took one look at the x ray and said the complexity of the breaks and spiral fractures meant it was way beyond anything even an experienced vet in normal practice would deal with. The guy that did the surgery specialises entirely in complex fractures of cats and other small animals. Just glad there was someone that could do it.

:shock: Wow how lucky to have an experienced vet practice like that near you. Good luck with the recovery, please show us picks of parsnip when you get him home.

Been wondering how Parsley was doing. Glad he's literally on the mend & going home, that should save you a long car journey. As hes bitten his tongue mybe you could feed him pureed veg or veg baby food. :)
