  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi and VD

New Kit
How old does a rabbit have to be to get its Myxi and VD jabs? We have a 9/10 week old baby doe and were just wondering when we need to get that sorted.

I'm not sure about the minimum age - Alfie had his myxi at 9.5 weeks though and then vhd 2 weeks later. :)

 Here are the product data sheets - these are the official legal documents which tell vets about how to use them.

http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Intervet_Schering-Plough/Nobivac_Myxo/-29531.html This says that the myxomatosis vaccine can be given from 6 weeks.

There are two different VHD vaccines available - cylap and lapinject. Lapinject is a new one and is only available in a pot of 5 doses, so some vets have both available depending on how many bunnies they are injecting each day :)

Firstly, here's the datasheet for cylap: http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Fort_Dodge_Animal_Health/Cylap/-44935.html It says can be used from 2.5-3 months (i.e. 10-12 weeks).

Lapinject: http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/CEVA_Animal_Health_Ltd/Lapinject_VHD/-42508.html Can be given from 5 weeks.

So your bunny is old enough to start her course :D If I were you, I would get the myxo done first as we are moving into myxi season. You then have to wait 2 weeks and can have the second vaccine done. Some people now are asking for the lapinject because some bunnies seem to get a localised reaction to cylap - personally I prefer lapinject simply because immunity develops more quickly (6 days instead of 21). But when you go for the myxi you can ask your vet what they usually use - your bun will be old enough to have either by the time you've had the 2 weeks after myxi :D
