Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Emily's lost weight

We've just noticed today that Emily seems to have lost a fair bit of weight. She's 5 years old, spayed and fully vaccinated.

She hates being picked up so generally we don't, so thats perhaps why we'd not noticed before. Plus she's having a huge moult right now which has covered up the weight loss.

She lives with Billy and they are fed exactly the same, mainly hay, plus a bit of veg and a few pellets. Neither of them have had pellets though for almost a week due to running out and not being able to get any until today.

I've settled them into the shed today, Emily is definately eating and pooing because I've seen her do it.

Why would Emily loose weight but not Billy?? My initial thought is EC??

I'm going to get her in at the vet sometime this week, but can anyone offer any suggestions??

what about drinking? has she been drinking more than normal? renal failure/problems or diabeties? maybe?

My Alfie was at the vets last week as he seemed a tad quiet & has lost weight. The vet weighed him & he's underweight so he's been fed separately from the group now twice a day & given porridge etc. He was always eating & drinking & pooing normally.

He's going to the vets again on Friday to see if he's gained weight. If he hasn't we will be looking at possible dental problems. He was panacured at the end of last year for 6 weeks after I had a foster with EC, & I intend to do everyone again Sept time, for 4 weeks.
