Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Blood!!!

Hi

I have a friend who has asked my advice and would like to tell her the right thing.

She does boarding bunnies and said when she went to feed this bunny she found blood around her litter tray and she checked her over no sign of any cut or anything and seems perfectly happy in her self, no diet change or anything, and when she went in later yesterday there was a little then too but today she said there was nothing and she seemed fine she just wondered what it could be>

Any ideas anyone i did say to perhaps get her checked out just in case even though she seemed okay in her self but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Is she certain it was blood ? Rabbit urine can be a dark orangey brown.

If it definately was blood and their is no obvious injury ( torn nail being a frequent one ) then she should get the Rabbit checked over by a Vet, particularly if she is an entire Doe as the bleeding my be indicative of a Uterine problem.

Did she check her claws? Often a nail which has been pulled out can bleed profusely for sometime.

blood

Hi jacks-jane
thanks for replying, she assures me that there is no obvious injury although i will check with her she has definately checked the nails or claws as she may not know to do that.

I did explain about rabbits urine being diff colours and darker sometimes depending on what eaten ect but she assures me nothing any different there.

I did tell her to check with vet though and will find out if she is an entire female as that as you say could be a serious problem.

Thanks alot for your help and advice much appreciated and i will pass it on.

Sooz i will as above tell her to check the claws as she may not have done that although she said no obvious sign of injury but thanks for that advice thats a great help.

any chance the bun is pregnant? there was spots of blood around hatties shed then she started bleeding underneath before she had her babies

Assuming no other injuries and also assuming she's entire ie. not neutered, please do get her checked out for uterine cancer. Before I knew much about bunnies, my first doe passed blood and I took her to the vet (not my current bunny-savvy vet). He assured me it wouldn't be a tumour and treated her for a bladder infection. I took her home, not entirely sure about the diagnosis, but knowing little about rabbit health, trusted my vet. She died some while later from uterine cancer after an emergency neuter (with a bunny specialist vet). I'll never forgive myself and still feel guilty nearly 15 years later.

Hi Lillian

Not sure about being pregnant but will ask her have at least some answeres for her but i think the most important advice would be get her checked out but thanks very much for your advice.

Mackers

Again not sure if shes entire or not have got a few questions to ask her but as i said main thing get her checked out i think especially after what youve told me how heartbreaking for you so sorry to hear that but certainly makes neutering so much more important to me when i hear what can happen.

thanks very much everyone for your quick replies

morning how is bun doing today? i would say wee can look like blood if they have a lot of protein in diet..ie rose leaves, carrot, apple tree leaves there is a surprising amount of non coloured plants that can turn it a dark orange and appear red. also i agree with everyone about vet check as could be uterine cancer another horrible thought is vhd has bun been vacccinated? hopefully its just a protein full diet good luck xxx
