Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cutting claws

Hi all

Has anybody got any advice for trimming claws without going to the vets? We would normally go, but the vets seem to stress Flo out and would rather avoid that if possible. She is an indoor rabbit with a bit of a dislike for the outdoors :?, which means we can't get her out to wear her claws down naturally. We are happy to have a go at it ourselves but need advice really on what to use, and how to keep Flo calm.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

WE migrate from nail clipper to dremel sanding tool. That's what the vet uses.

for reason, check out this web site

www.peticure.com

so, get a dremel and carefully sand it down

or you can buy a dremel, call that co. above and buy the "cap" part for safety reason

I know, that's why the unit won't work. But you can buy the plastic cap, which serves effectively as the same thing.

Peticure = dremel + peticure plastic safety cap

 i cut ours... i cut, 3 guinea pigs nails, 2 cats nails and three buns nails:lol: you can buy cat/bun nail cutters from a pet shop or the vets.
they have to be different from people ones as their nails are shaped differently.
if the nails are white or clear you can hold a torch pointing through the nail to see the quick (this is the thing you need to miss as if you cut through this it bleeds profusely) its a pink colour . dont cut too near it either.
you may feel better taking them to the vet and watching them do it so you can get the idea.the problems start if the nails are a dark colour and you cant see the quick.
good luck!

Thanks rabbitmum. Luckily Flo's nails are a light colour and we can see the quick so will definately try what you've suggested. Thank you! xx
