Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Elongated Poos

The Duchess

Wise Old Thumper
I know that elongated poos aren't normal but haven't ever really seen any before.

This morning I have been cleaning out and found these......

Can anybody give me some advice on what might be causing them? The bunny responsible has also had a few uneaten cecals over the last day or so. Both her and her partner bunny do the most amazing round and hayfilled big poos normally so this is of some concern. The lady responsible Josie, and her fella's poos are always different in colour so I know that they are hers. She ate her breakfast with gusto this morning and is a hay monster normally.

Thanks in advance.

Helen

I should also say that both bunnies were treated this week with an Ivermectin jab for Josie having very early stage mites. Could this have upset her tummy>

I'm not sure on the injection, but it looks like there's a fair bit of hair in the poos which I know can cause some problems. There are various things people give buns when they're moulting such as pineapple juice which are supposed to help the hair out the system.

 I have seen a couple like this from mine lately and strung together sometimes. If you break it apart you will probably see that it is hair - better out than in! Are they moulting - mine are! I am grooming them both twice a day to get as much hair off them as I can.

I try to get mine to take in more fluids. I also give some pure pinepple juice every 2-3 days during a moult. Someone uses Bromelain tablets from health shop and gives them daily I think during a moult.

Thank you for your replies.

Josie is moulting heavily at the moment and having just had a much closer look at the broken open poos, there certainly is evidence of some very thin fluff in them.

The pair of them are currently tucking into some fantastic stalky hay. which accounts for the great size of the poos. They are both very thirsty drinkers too (always have been) so I think that the gut should be pretty good. I wondered if it's anything to do with the movement through the gut, as well as what's in it.

Yes, I think you're probably correct. IME large bullet poops mean slow down of the gut due to any number of causes.

Thank you. I will get my medical book out and see if there is anything in that. She seems fine, eating normally so I am not panicking just yet.

It could be nothing, they aren't particularly long anyways.

One of my buns had really long poops, like rifle bullets...she had noticably slack stomach muscles though and had a pot-bellied appearance towards the end of her life.

The Pineapple n Papaya tablets are very good for when ya bunny is moulting my old boy moults heavy n i crush 1 a day onto his morning feed to keep the hair flowing thru what i miss, hes not too bad now its nearly all gone after i plucked handfuls out for him :)
