  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Reducing the smell of urine?

Is there a way to reduce the odor of my rabbit's urine? he is almost 4 months old. I heard somewhere that a certain type of fruits can reduce the smell of urine. Maybe it was apples? There was also a treat at the petstore that reduces the smell of urine.

I don't kow about foodstuffs being effective, but I know that neutered buck's urine isn't so pungent.

I haven't ever heard of being able to reduce the smell of the actual urine but a product you can use for cleaning up where there has been urine is Simple Solution.

Not sure about the eating but I use cardboard squares in the litter tray and surprisingly this reduced the smell more than cat litter.

not sure about using foods to change the smell but neutered buns have less smelly wee and also if you use a highly absorbant material such as carefresh/megazorb that will help control oders. regular cleaning helps too :)

I now use megazorb which definitely reduced the smell and it is cleaned out twice a day if they are confined during the day. Once a day if we are in and they are out free range.

I have a book on different uses of vinegar and one of the tips is too rinse the tray or hutch with white distilled vinegar. Leave it dry and hey presto! I use it on Charlie's litter tray and it really works.
