Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help for Bamboo

Caro

New Kit
Hi !

I have just introduced myself in the right section.

My rabbit Bamboo has an intestinal problem since Sunday. Sunday morning, I found him very sad, he didn't want to move, and there was some food in his dish. I already new that something was wrong so I change his litter to check if he does some poo or not.
I also tried to give him some pineapple juice and paraffin but he refused everything.

I went to the vet Sunday evening and from that day I go everyday to the vet which says that he has intestinal blockage. The vet feels a big ball in his stomach.
Bamboo receives fluids everyday and some injections because he refuses to drink and to eat.
I manage to give him some chicory and carrot tops, but that's the only thing he accepts to eat. Yesterday evening he drunk a little bit of pineapple juice and water (10 ml) and this morning a little bit of pineapple juice again.

I have to see the vet again this afternoon and she'll decide if Bamboo need an X-ray or not.
The problem for me is that Bamboo needs an anaesthesia, done by injection, and I have lost one rabbit in France because of that kind of anaesthesia.

I would like to know if there is another solution for Bamboo... I don't want to loose him.

Thanks for reading and sorry for my english.

Sorry to hear about Bamboo :(

Read this article, it's very good:

If he has an actual blockage, then the best thing would be to get lots of fluids into him subcutaneously (under the skin via injection). This will hopefully re-hydrate the blockage and help it pass through normally.

He will also need pain medication by injection.

There probably isn't much point syringing medication via his mouth because the blockage will stop it being absorbed properly.

Good luck

Amy
