  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

 I dropped into a petshop to pick up some stuff today and sitting in the hutches were about 4 guinea pigs , the one was attacking the other and the one he was attacking had scabs and cuts all up his back . Then there was a lionhead rabbit lying in the back thing poor thing had puffy , wet eyes and could barely keep them open which led me to worry about myxi . Then in the hutch above , another four guinea pigs and another lionhead and above them another four guinea pigs with a lopeared rabbit , he was grey and white , well i say grey and white the white in him was yellow he was filthy:(. The RSPCA by us are absolutely rubbish so , i'm not sure who to contact , also i wasn't to happy about the 3 ft hutch they were selling , a rabbit could barely hop once in it . Please help , i'm stuck as to what to do .

You need to contact the local council Environmental Health Department. They issue the licences to enable Petshops to sell animals.

I was in contact with the RSPCA yesterday re a Petshop near me. The RSPCA said that 'they do not have the resources to send Inspectors out to investigate reports about animals in Petshops and their policy is now to refer the complainent to the local council'

............nope, it makes no sense to me either..............

The Environmental Health Dept at your local council licence the petshop so contact them and report what you have found, also ring the National Cruelty Line of the RSPCA so they can send out an inspector-on their website.

Let us know what happens
