 hiya.

just a quick q.
i know buns shouldnt have too much carrot, so ours get a little once a week as a treat. Is it ok though for them to have carrot tops (the green bit) daily?.

At the RWA conference last year they said don't give carrot tops daily, just as an occasional treat - as they are really really high in calcium so can cause kidney/bladder problems if fed daily.

Its weird everyone thinks that bunnies have to eat carrots yet I read a book stating that carrots should just be fed as a treat as its the equivalent of chocolate to humans. I dont know if this is true or not?? However its the same with fruit you are only meant to give them a small piece once a week as its very acidic and rots teeth yet I know several buns who only get fresh fruit and veg daily and they are real healthy. be interesting to know what yous do? Mine seem fine but I dont give them carrot every day I try to give them a change incase they get fed up sad I know.

my 2 buns get carrot once maybe 2 a week. i give them spring greens daily, and shauny half a sprout daily (miss moll doesnt like them:roll:) she gets a piece of broc daily (shauny doesnt like that:roll:).

we have had shauny for about a year and molly for 8yrs. i used to feed moll and my elvis (who passed away) fine trimmed beans (for bout 6yrs) untill i read they shouldnt be having them.

My old rabbits used to get carrots and apples everyday for their whole lives and not one of them went to the vet with diet related problems... Teeth fine, poo fine kidneys, etc...

My current two get half a carrot each (and the top) every day amongst other veg and they are fine as well...

I guess it's like humans really, some people eat junk food all the time and yet stay pretty healthy, others only have to look at a cake to suffer. I guess it's all things in moderation (except those that are poisonous) really.

I know buns are not supposed to have carrots but Will had them everyday and she was a french lop who lived for almost 7years with no dental problems.B has carrots with their tops most days, she loves them.I believe the tops are high in calcium but even though B is on a low calcium diet ive been told by the harrogate specialist that she should still have her green veg but just cut out high calcium treats [dried fruit]and mineral sticks. So in my opinion they dont do any harm. Its all personal preference i guess.:)
